Find Your Ideal Pilates Routine: How Often Should You Practice?

One of the questions we often get from new Pilates students at Gather Pilates is: How often should I do Pilates? You’ve attended your first class, felt muscles you didn’t even know you had, and experienced that unmistakable ‘Pilates glow.’ Naturally, the next question is: How often should you practice to truly see and feel the benefits?

The short answer? It depends—and that’s actually great news. At Gather Pilates, we believe there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Your ideal Pilates routine is as unique as you are, shaped by your goals, your schedule, and how your body feels. Our focus is on helping you build a sustainable practice that you can commit to—one that leaves you feeling strong, balanced, and confident in your own skin. It’s about creating a routine that fits seamlessly into your life and sets you up for long-term success.

Let’s break down what a consistent Pilates practice could look like for you, no matter where you are on your journey.

The Sweet Spot of Consistency

Joseph Pilates himself was a big believer in consistency. He famously said, “In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see the difference, and in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body.” While the “new body” part is a bit dramatic (let’s call it an upgraded version), the sentiment holds true: consistency is key.

Regular practice is what allows your body to create new muscle memory, improve neuromuscular patterns, and build deep core strength. Think of it like learning a new language. You wouldn’t expect to become fluent by studying once a month. The same goes for your body. The more frequently you practice, the more “fluent” your body becomes in the language of Pilates.

That said, we also want you to be successful in your journey toward looking and feeling your best. The more you practice, the quicker you’ll meet your goals. However, we’d rather you commit to two classes a week and show up every time than overcommit and feel overwhelmed. Maybe you start with one class and add a bonus session on weeks when your schedule allows. It’s all about finding a rhythm that works for you.

If You’re Just Starting Out: Welcome!

First off, welcome to the Gather Pilates Posse! Right now, the most important thing is building a solid foundation. You’re learning a new way to move, connecting with your core, and mastering the art of getting your feet in the straps (don’t worry—it’s easier than it looks!). It’s an exciting journey, and it’s perfectly normal to feel a little overwhelmed at first.

Recommended Frequency: 1-2 times per week
Starting with one or two sessions a week is perfect. This gives your body time to adapt and recover between classes. You’ll start to feel the changes—maybe you’ll stand a little taller after a walk around Payette Lake or notice that carrying groceries and stacking firewood feels easier—without feeling overworked. At this stage, it’s all about learning the principles, getting comfortable with the equipment, and celebrating the small wins. Remember, every single person in our studio was a beginner once.

For the Intermediate Practitioner: Finding Your Groove

You’ve got the basics down. You know your footwork and other Reformer exercises like Leg Circles, and you’re starting to feel more confident and in control. This is the stage where you can really start to see significant changes in your strength, flexibility, and overall posture. You’re ready to deepen your practice and challenge yourself a bit more.

Recommended Frequency: 2-3 times per week.

Two to three sessions a week is the sweet spot for many people looking for Pilates in McCall. This frequency allows you to build on the progress you’re making each week while still giving your body adequate rest. You’ll notice that you get stronger, your movements become more fluid, and you can tackle more challenging exercises. This is when the “seeing the difference” part of Joseph Pilates’ promise really kicks in. You might notice more definition in your arms or that your chronic back pain has started to fade.

For the Advanced Practitioner: Deepening the Work

You are hooked! You dream about the short spine massage and you live for a good side-lying series. At this level, Pilates is less of a workout and more of an integral part of your lifestyle. You’re not just going through the motions; you’re exploring the nuances of each movement and continuously refining your technique and challenging yourself in new ways.

Recommended Frequency: 3-5 times per week

Practicing three to five times a week allows you to maintain and build upon your advanced strength and body awareness. At this stage, you might also want to mix up the types of classes you take. Perhaps you combine a few group Reformer classes with a private session to focus on specific goals or a springboard class to challenge your body in a different way. This frequency keeps your practice feeling fresh and continuously challenging.

The Most Important Factor: Listen to Your Body

While these recommendations are a great starting point, the most important rule is to listen to your body. Some weeks you might feel energetic and ready for four classes. Other weeks, life gets in the way or you’re feeling tired, and one class is all you can manage. Both are perfectly okay.

Pilates is about balance, in mind and body. It’s a mindful practice designed to make you feel better, not worse. If you’re feeling sore, take an extra rest day. If you’re feeling stressed, a gentle session might be exactly what you need. At Gather Pilates, our instructors are here to help you adapt any exercise to meet you where you are on any given day.

Making Your Pilates Practice Sustainable

The best Pilates routine is the one you can stick with. Don’t set yourself up for failure by committing to five classes a week if your schedule realistically only allows for two. Start small, be consistent, and build from there.

Find a time that works for you, book your classes in advance, and maybe even find a Pilates pal to keep you accountable. Before you know it, your Pilates practice will be a non-negotiable part of your week—that special time you carve out just for you.

No matter how often you choose to practice, we’re here to support you every step of the way. We’re not counting how many times you show up; we’re just happy to see you when you do. Come gather with us in our downtown McCall studio and find the rhythm that works for you.
